Abstract

Beauty is seen important in women’s life as it can benefit them in many ways in society such as having good confidence. Women are the subject of beauty since ages ago. The most popular beauty standard is set by the western culture including being tall, white, lightskinned and most importantly thin however depending on the cultures, beauty standard may vary. Media plays important part in shaping the standard of beauty, especially in the existence of new media such as Instagram. With the images of unrealistic body images, women may do harmful effort in order to fit into the standard set by the media. The object of this research is the Instagram account of Iskra Lawrence (@iskra). As a model who has curvaceous figure, famously known as plus-size model, through her posts, Iskra fights against the patriarchal norm of beauty set by media. Adopting qualitative method, researcher used Critical Discourse Analysis with Sara Mills approach by analysing text on identifying its subject and object position, and the position of the reader in that text. The result of the research shows that Iskra can optimize and use social media as an act of feminism in countering beauty standard set by media. / Kecantikan dianggap penting dalam kehidupan wanita karena dapat menguntungkan mereka dalam banyak hal di masyarakat seperti memiliki kepercayaan diri yang baik. Wanita juga menjadi subjek kecantikan sejak berabad-abad lalu. Standar kecantikan paling populer ditetapkan oleh budaya barat termasuk memiliki tubuh tinggi, kulit putih dan terang dan yang paling penting tubuh yang kurus. Namun setiap budaya memiliki standar kecantikan yang berbeda. Media memainkan peran penting dalam membentuk standar kecantikan, terutama dalam keberadaan media baru seperti Instagram. Dengan gambar-gambar gambar tubuh yang tidak realistis, wanita dapat melakukan apa saja yang mereka bisa agar mencapai standar yang ditetapkan oleh media. Objek penelitian ini adalah Instagram Iskra Lawrence (@iskra) sebagai seorang model yang memiliki tubuh berkelok, yang disebut juga sebagai model plus-size, melalui unggahannya, Iskra berjuang melawan norma kecantikan patriarki yang ditetapkan oleh media. Dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif, peneliti menggunakan Analisis Wacana Kritis dengan pendekatan Sara Mills yang mencakup analisis teks dengan mengidentifikasi posisi subjek dan objeknya, dan posisi pembaca dalam teks tersebut. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah bagaimana Iskra dapat mengoptimalkan dan menggunakan media sosial sebagai tindakan feminisme dalam melawan standar kecantikan yang ditetapkan oleh media.
