Abstract

Every probiotic have distinct characteristics and strains that influence its modulatory effect. This study aims to evaluate immunomodulatory effects from L. plantarum F75, P. pentosaceus D32, and E. hirae MD39 through evaluation of phagocytic activity assay, haemagglutination of total antibody and IgG, as well as evaluation of TNF-α from mice blood sera. A total of 48 four-week-old male BALB/c mice were used in this research. The mice were divided into 6 groups, each consisting of 8 mice. Probiotics were given orally for 14 consecutive days except on placebo and negative control group. Each week 2 mice from each group were tested. P. pentosaceus D32 (79,86 %) shows a higher activity than E. hirae MD39 (63,03 %) and L. plantarum F75 (59,01 %) in phagocytic assay. Based on haemagglutination of total antibody and IgG assay on day 21, L. plantarum F75 (11,44 and 4,82) has a higher antibody production than E. hirae MD39 (9,63 and 3,61) and P. pentosaceus D32 (2,41 and 2,41). TNF-α increased from day 0 to day 7 and decreased from day 14 to day 21. In conclusion, based on the result of phagocytic activity assay, P. pentosaceus D32 (79,86 %) has the most significant activity. Based on haemagglutination of total antibody and IgG assay, L. plantarum F75 (11,44 and 4,82) has the highest antibody production.
