Abstract

Universitas Pelita Harapan’s Hospitality Management students had recently done their internships in various hotels in Indonesia. Guest or customer satisfaction has been highly highlighted and researched on, however not for employee’s job satisfaction, and in this case, intern’s internship satisfaction. The job characteristics model proposed by Hackman and Oldham (1976) has largely been used for job design research, therefore this study in turn aims to utilize the model to predict internship satisfaction. The job characteristics model consists of five predicting variables; however, this study is going to use only four out of the five, namely skill variety, task significance, autonomy and feedback. The data of the study was obtained from a questionnaire distributed to 72 students who have recently finished their internship in hotels in Indonesia, in which the reliability and validity of the questionnaire was tested, as well as the classical assumption tests. Multiple regression analysis was done after, in which all four predicting variables was found to have a positive relationship with the outcome variable, further supported as well by the determination test and the F-Test, which concluded in the acceptance of the first hypothesis that there is a significant relationship between job characteristics and internship satisfaction. A deeper analysis into the effects of each individual predicting variables using the t-test found that the variables skill variety and autonomy have significant relationships with internship satisfaction, however task significance and feedback do not.
