Abstract

Background: The aggressive promotion of formulated nutrition and other breast-milk substitutes has led to an increase in child morbidity and mortality, especially in poor and developing countries. Lack of knowledge about breastfeeding and a short period of postpartum hospitalization makes two-thirds of women experience failure of breastfeeding. Method: This study uses a cross-sectional study conducted on 130 infants who came for medical checkup at the Pediatric Clinic of Pertamina Hospital Balikpapan. Sample criteria include: infants born with a gestational age between 37-40 weeks with birth weight of 2500- 4000 grams, infants with 6-9 months of age, good nutritional status with a z-score of -1 to +2 SD on the WHO growth chart. Data collection was carried out in the period of July-August 2018. Data collection was conducted by interviewing the history of nutrition of the infant and measuring infant head circumference, weight, and length. The data obtained was collected with Microsoft Excel 2013 and processed using the SPSS program. The statistical tests used were the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: There is no significance between mean head circumference to exclusively breast-fed infants or formula-fed infants (p=0,965). Analysis conducted based on gender also had no significance with p=0,568 for male infants and p=0,338 for female infants. Conclusion: There is no statistical significance between mean head circumference to exclusively breast-fed infants or formula-fed infants / Latar belakang: Promosi susu formula dan nutrisi pengganti ASI lainnya yang agresif menyebabkan kenaikan tingkat morbiditas dan mortalitas anak, terutama di negara-negara miskin dan berkembang.
