Abstract
Background: Contact lenses are prosthetic aids that are used on the eye, similar to glasses, to help the abnormal function of the eye itself to return to normal. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 1.3 billion people worldwide who have visual impairments or eye disorders, such as nearsightedness or myopia, hyperopia or farsightedness, even blindness. Unfortunately, contact lenses, which are meant to prevent vision problems, come with their own set of side effects. Dry eye syndrome, also known as DED or dry eye disease is a common type of eye disorder. This condition causes eye pain, visual disturbances, and tear film instability. This can cause damage to the surface of the eye. Dry eye is an eye disorder characterized by conjunctival hyperemia, thickening of the eye epithelium and cornea, itching, burning sensation in the eye, and, in some cases, decreased vision. Tear function is reduced in dry eyes.
Objective: This research was conducted to find out and understand whether there is a relationship between the duration of contact lens use and the incidence of dry eye syndrome in students of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Pelita Harapan.
Methodology: This study used an unpaired categorical comparative analytic design with a cross-sectional study design. The sampling technique used was consecutive sampling with subjects who met the criteria. The study will use primary data from the results of eye examination with a fluorescein test by an ophthalmologist and filling out the Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire.
Results: in this study a significant relationship was found between the duration of contact lens use and the incidence of dry eye syndrome with a p value < 0.05 for the fluorescein test indicator and a p value < 0.05 for the OSDI questionnaire indicator
Keywords: Dry eye syndrome, Contact lens, fluorescein test, ocular surface disease index
