Abstract

Ulos Sadum merupakan salah satu dari sekian banyak jenis Ulos yang dapat ditemukan dalam koleksi Ulos Batak. Kain tenun ini sering digunakan dalam kegiatan ritual dan menjunjung tinggi nilai-nilai penting dalam hidup seperti Dalihan Na Tolu yang melambangkan filosofi masyarakat Batak tentang menjalin hubungan dengan orang lain dalam masyarakat. Seiring berjalannya waktu, masyarakat Batak mengalami pergeseran nilai-nilai budayanya karena perkembangan zaman dan teknologi, diperlukan upaya untuk memperkuat identitas budaya Batak. Proses perancangan ini dilakukan untuk mengekstrak elemen-elemen pada Ulos Sadum yang dapat mewakili nilai-nilai budaya yang ada di dalam Tipe Tampilan ‘NGOLU’. Prosesnya dilakukan dengan metode Typographic Design Process oleh Rob Carter. Proses perancangan ini dilakukan untuk menunjukkan bahwa dibalik sebuah desain huruf yang sering digunakan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari sebagai media komunikasi ternyata mempunyai makna yang lebih dalam dan dapat digunakan sebagai media yang dapat membantu melestarikan seni. / Ulos Sadum is one of many kinds of Ulos that can be found in the Ulos Batak collections. This woven cloth is often used in ritual activities and upholds important live values such as Dalihan Na Tolu which symbolize Bataknese people philosophy about establishing relationships with other people in the community. As time goes by, Bataknese people is experiencing a shift in their culture values due to development over time dan technology, efforts are needed to strengthen the Bataknese cultural identity. This design process is carried out to extract the elements from the Ulos Sadum that can represent the cultural values inside of ‘NGOLU’ Display Type. The process is done using the Typographic Design Process method by Rob Carter. Thie design process is carried out to show that behind a type design that often used in our daily life as a media for communication could have deeper meaning inside of it and can be used as a media that can help preserve cuture.
