Abstract
Lawsonia inermis L. leaves contain Lawsone (2-hydroxy-1:4 naphthakuinone) which has antifungal properties against Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Both of these fungi can infect the nail, known as Tinea unguium. One of the delivery systems in antifungal treatment is transungual drug delivery, topical drug delivery through anti-mycotic nail varnish (nail polish). This study aims to see the potential of 96% ethanol extract of Lawsonia inermis L. as an antifungal and at the same time can provide color to the nails. The extraction method used was maceration with 96% ethanol solvent. Testing the antifungal activity of the extract used well diffusion method with different concentrations. Determination of antifungal activity is expressed in the zone of inhibition formed. Formulation optimization with the ratio of extract concentration and polyvinyl pyrrolidone concentration as a polymer to obtain the optimum formula for antifungal potential. The concentration of extract taken in the formulation is 15% and the results of the formulation based on data analysis on polyvinyl pyrrolidone polymers are good in formulations I and III, but in the effectiveness of the drug preparation as an anti-fungal, formula V is better because it has a wide zone of inhibition and formulation V has also fulfilled all other range of formulation evaluation requirements.
