Abstract
Background: Complete basic vaccination is a crucial factor in a child's developmental process. However, there are still many people who are doubtful or less aware of the importance of basic vaccinations. Several studies have been done to find a connection between vaccination and growth and development. Nevertheless, there are doubts on the way and the results of previous studies have not concluded the direct relationship between vaccination and development in children. Aim: To find the association between the completion of basic vaccination and toddlers’ development. Methods: this case-control study was conducted quantitatively using analytic-comparative categoric. The respondents involved are 200 parents/toddlers aged 1-3 years old who are chosen with non-probability quota method and undergoing vaccination in Tangerang medical facilities (including POSYANDU). The obtained data were analysed bivariately using Chisquare and multivariately using logistic regression. Results: out of the 200 toddlers, there are 59 (29.0%) found to have developmental issues and 32 of them had completed their basic vaccination. Chi-square test results are as follows: p=0.498, OR=0.786 (CI:0.427-1.446). Chronic illness is found to be one of the factors contributing to higher risk of abnormal development such as p=0.012, OR=5.208 (CI: 1.257- 21.580). The number of children in the family also contributes to child’s development with p=0.025, OR=2.134 (CI:1.091-4.177). Meanwhile, this study tried to find the association between child development and other factors (mother’s education and occupation, infrastructure around the respondents such as transportation access, road condition, distance and transportation cost). However, the results drawn are inconclusive. Conclusion: According to the results, we can conclude that complete basic vaccination, mother’s education, occupation, transportation access, road condition, distance and transportation cost are not significantly related to child development. On the other hand, we managed to find chronic illness and number of children in the family to be related with child development.
