Abstract

Kata Kunci: Indeks massa tubuh, open appendectomy, durasi operasi / Background: Surgical challenges escalate in overweight and obese patients, especially in open appendectomy. These challenges can prolong surgery duration, increasing the risk of postoperative complications and hospital costs. Objective: To analyze the association between being overweight and the average duration of open appendectomy surgery (in minutes) in patients at Siloam Hospitals Lippo Village. Method: This quantitative study employs a retrospective cohort study design involving 60 patients at Siloam Hospitals Lippo Village. Numeric variables were tested using unpaired comparative analytical statistical tests with quota sampling from January to April 2024. Results: The average duration of surgery for patients with a BMI <23 kg/m² was found to be 57.3 minutes (SD = 24.5, min. = 15, max. = 125), while for patients with a BMI ≥23 kg/m² it was 86.1 minutes (SD = 34.4, min. = 35, max. = 145). Statistical analysis using the Mann-Whitney U test showed a significant difference in the duration of surgery between the two groups (p = 0.000394). Conclusion: The average duration of open appendectomy surgery (in minutes) is longer in patients with a body mass index (BMI) ≥23 kg/m² at Siloam Hospitals Lippo Village. Keywords: Body mass index, open appendectomy, duration of surgery
