Abstract

Seorang mahasiswa dengan kecerdasan emosional yang baik mampu mengatur dan mengontrol emosi untuk meminimalisir permasalahan personal, akademik, dan sosial. Meskipun demikian, hasil penelitian mengenai hubungan kecerdasan emosional dengan prestasi akademis masih sangat bervariasi. Hal ini dapat dikarenakan penelitian terdahulu hanya mengukur nilai ujian ataupun indeks prestasi kumulatif (IPK) tanpa menilai student engagement mahasiswa yang mencakup mengerjakan tugas, mengikuti kuliah serta berpartisipasi dalam aktivitas di luar pembelajaran seperti aktivitas organisasi kampus atau kepanitiaan. Padahal, berbagai penelitian menemukan bahwa student engagement merupakan salah satu prediktor yang penting dalam kesuksesan akademik mahasiswa. Maka, penelitian ini berfokus pada bagaimana kecerdasan emosional berhubungan dengan student engagement mahasiswa. Penelitian ini merupakan studi analitik korelatif dengan desain studi potong lintang. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Pelita Harapan pada bulan Januari hingga Mei 2024. Metode pengambilan sampel yang akan digunakan adalah purposive sampling. Sampel sebanyak 275 orang diambil dari mahasiswa Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Pelita Harapan angkatan 2021, 2022, dan 2023. Untuk mengukur kecerdasan emosional sampel, peneliti menggunakan Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire - Short Form (TEIQue-SF), sedangkan, untuk mengukur student engagement, peneliti menggunakan University Student Engagement Inventory (USEI) yang dimuat di dalam satu Google form. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa terdapat hubungan kuat berpola positif antara kecerdasan emosional dengan student engagement (r=0,508). Nevertheless, research findings on the relationship between emotional intelligence and academic achievement vary widely. This may be because previous studies only measured exam scores or cumulative GPA without assessing student engagement, which includes completing assignments, attending lectures, and participating in extracurricular activities such as campus organizations or committees. In fact, various studies have found that student engagement is one of the important predictors of academic success. Therefore, this research focuses on how emotional intelligence is related to student engagement. This research is a correlational analytic study with a cross-sectional study design. It was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pelita Harapan, from January to May 2024. The sampling method used is purposive sampling. A sample of 275 students was taken from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pelita Harapan, classes of 2021, 2022, and 2023. To measure the emotional intelligence of the samples, researchers used the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire - Short Form (TEIQue-SF), while to measure student engagement, researchers used the University Student Engagement Inventory (USEI) included in one Google form.
