Abstract
The aim of aesthetic interpretation is to apprehend a work of art values, and likewise to make the best use out of one’s understanding and appreciation of said artwork. However, works of art are not the easiest to comprehend and grasp, hence making the act of interpreting them even more difficult. Galleries, in turn, provide visitors with some form of description as a way to resolve this issue. Whatever way a gallery chooses to go about it, what they are essentially doing is taking away the ability from a visitor to formulate their own interpretation of a work of art, socially constructing a reality wherein said visitor will have no choice but to succumb to the meanings the gallery has formed. “Empty Signifiers” is an art exhibition showcased in the Semarang Contemporary Art Gallery, and is the research object being examined. The researcher’s focus was to observe and discover how the people involved in the execution of the exhibition socially constructed the meaning behind the featured art. After the completion of this research, the research has come to a conclusion that the meaning of art, or in this case, an art exhibition was socially constructed through the means of social interaction in three steps: externalization, objectivation, and internalization.
