Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has had a significant impact on generation Z's social interaction patterns. One of the impacts is phubbing, the behavior of ignoring interlocutors in face-to-face interactions due to focus on mobile devices. Along with the times, phubbing spreads through social interactions and group norms, until it eventually becomes social customs (folkways) that are accepted without criticism. This study uses Contagion Theory to analyze the transmission process of phubbing and the concept of folkways to understand how this behavior is accepted as a social norm. The method used is phenomenology, which explores the subjective experiences of informants related to phubbing. The results showed that phubbing in generation Z is driven by digitalization, social pressure, Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), and academic and professional demands. The transmission process occurs through intense social interactions, reinforced by group norms and adaptation to technology. Eventually, phubbing becomes part of folkways, which are passed on as social habits without critical consideration. This study concludes that phubbing is a complex social phenomenon, formed from the interaction between technology, social norms and generation Z characteristics. The findings provide important insights into how digitalization shapes new social norms among generation Z.
