Abstract

The Brobosan tradition is a ritual in the Javanese death ceremony that is carried out before the body is taken to the cemetery. The family surrounds the body three times while praying as a final respect, an expression of gratitude for the deceased's services, and a request for forgiveness for the deceased's mistakes during his life. This study employs a qualitative approach with an interpretive paradigm and ethnographic method to explore the value of respect in the Brobosan tradition. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with the ceremony leader, Javanese cultural experts, and family members, along with non-participant observation in Yogyakarta. Data analysis followed the Miles & Huberman model, including data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The study reveals that the Brobosan Ceremony is a profound expression of cultural communication within Javanese families, offering a unique space for spiritual reflection. This ritual serves as a final gesture of respect for the deceased while strengthening family bonds and passing on cultural values. Despite modernization, the Brobosan tradition remains preserved as a crucial element of Javanese identity. It embodies spiritual and social values, acknowledging death as a respected part of the life cycle.
