This phenomenon reflects individuals' efforts to construct an authentic self-identity through body art. This study employs a qualitative approach with phenomenological methods to explore the subjective experiences of three young female informants aged 20–25: I, N, and T. Two of them have had tattoos for several years, while one informant recently acquired her first tattoo a few months ago. Through interviews with these young women from South Jakarta, the researcher examined how tattoos contribute to identity formation using symbolic interaction theory, social identity theory, social penetration theory, and dramaturgy theory. The findings reveal that tattoos play a significant role in the identity formation process for the informants. Tattoos are perceived as an effective medium to reflect life experiences, personal values, and unique aesthetic expressions. Additionally, tattoos contribute to boosting self-confidence, serve as visual symbols representing their personalities, and function as integral elements in how they understand, perceive, and present themselves to others. In conclusion, tattoos among young women are not merely decorative body art but also representations of identity, reflecting their life journeys, personal preferences, and self-expression. Tattoos embody personal stories and individuality, making them an essential part of the process of shaping and communicating their identities.
