Abstract

This research examines the role of Vatican religious diplomacy in fostering interfaith dialogue between Christian and Muslim communities in the Central African Republic (CAR) from 2013 to 2024. Through a qualitative and descriptive approach and Transnational Constructivism theory, this research explores how the Vatican leveraged its moral authority, religious narratives, and humanitarian initiatives to bridge divides caused by ethno-religious conflicts triggered by the Séléka coalition rebellion in 2013. The findings of this research indicate that the Vatican successfully facilitated dialogue spaces through Pope Francis’s 2015 visit, the establishment of the National Religious Peace Platform, and initiatives such as humanitarian aid and advocacy for social justice. These efforts enhanced mutual respect and collaboration among conflicting communities. However, the impact of these efforts was limited by CAR's complex political and economic dynamics. This research underscores the significance of religious narratives in conflict mediation, as exemplified by Vatican documents like Pacem in Terris and Fratelli Tutti. It highlights the unique role of religious institutions as normative actors in shaping global norms for peace and reconciliation.
