Abstract

Islamofobia telah mewarnai dunia perpolitikan Amerika Serikat, terlebih pada masa kampanye pemilihan calon presiden AS tahun 2016. Pasalnya, kandidat dari partai Republik, Donald Trump, telah mengembangkan narasi Islamofobia dalam retorika politiknya dengan tujuan meraih dukungan masyarakat Amerika Serikat, melalui pernyataannya “I think Islam hate us” dan total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the U.S. This issue gained prominence when the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, incorporated Islamophobic narratives into his political rhetoric to garner support from the American, through his statement “I think Islam hate us” and total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the U.S. Conssequently, his approach led to discriminatory actions and human rights violations against the Muslim community in United States, especially on sosial media platforms. This thesis focuses on analyzing Islamophobic during President Donald Trump’s campaign, emphasizing the role of social media in disseminating anti-muslim narratives. It also seeks to identify the impacts of Islamophobic campaign on social media, experiences not only by American Muslim but also by Muslim globally. This thesis adopt the Constructivism theory framework, incorporating concepts of Islamophobia and identity politics, social media as a tool for digital campaigns in a political context, and the role of civil society to combat Islamophobia. This thesis employs a qualitative approach using the case study method, with data obtained through content analysis of Donald Trump’s social media posts and a review of relevant literature. Furthermore, this thesis also explores the role of government, international organizations, and Muslim communities to combat Islamophobia in United States. The findings reveal that Trump's rhetoric on social media significantly influenced collective public perceptions. Social media played a pivotal role in amplifying Islamophobic narratives, especially when Trump stated “Islam hate us”, and reinforcing negative stereotypes about the Muslim community. The results of this research are contribute to a deeper understanding of the dynamics of Islamophobia and serve as a foundation for concrete steps toward creating a more inclusive and tolerant society.
