Abstract
The phenomenon of the increasing number of Indonesian students studying abroad, especially in Melbourne as the second student city in the world and the first choice of Indonesian students to continue their studies, raises questions regarding the communication strategies they use in adapting to the multicultural environment. Melbourne is considered one of the most multicultural cities in the world, home to 140 different cultures. This study aims to explore the communication strategies and intercultural adaptation process of Indonesian students in Melbourne as an effort to face the challenges of a multicultural environment. The theories used in this research are communication accommodation theory and uncertainty reduction theory. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method and data collection through interview techniques, observation, and literature study. Interviews were conducted with five active students and alumni from Indonesia from various universities in Melbourne. The results show that in the adaptation process, students apply various strategies such as culture shock phases awareness, joining the Indonesian community, practicing self-confidence when communicating in an international environment, and finding similarities amid the differences they face. Despite the differences between Indonesia and Australia, students managed to integrate values from both cultures and develop effective communication strategies.
