Abstract

This study focuses on the influence of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) on consumer behavior
related to lifestyle among Generation Z in Jabodetabek. FoMO refers to the anxiety or fear of
missing out on information or experiences that are trending. Meanwhile, consumer behavior
related to lifestyle refers to the tendency to purchase goods or services that are not necessary
for basic needs, but are sought for emotional or social satisfaction. The FoMO variable is
measured using the Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMOS) developed by Przybylski et al. (2013),
while consumer behavior is measured using the Consumer Behavior Scale by Lina & Rosyid
(1997). This study employs purposive sampling, with data collected through a survey involving
76 participants aged 18 to 27 years. The Pearson correlation test results show a significant
positive relationship (r(76) = 0.429***, p < 0.001) between FoMO and consumer behavior.
Regression analysis results also indicate that FoMO significantly influences consumer
behavior related to lifestyle (F(1,74) = 16.689, p < .001). These results highlight how FoMO,
or the anxiety of missing out, can influence lifestyle-related consumer behavior among
Generation Z in Jabodetabek.
