Abstract

LPDP awardee students in Newyctork exhibit a commendable ability to adapt to culture shock compared to other international scholarship recipients who may face similar challenges with varying outcomes. This adaptation process involves effective communication strategies, personal approaches, interaction with diverse cultural groups, and adjustments to new norms and values. This study employs a qualitative phenomenological method, as it focuses on latent data, delves into the students' experiences, and explores their journey through culture shock. The research identifies four phases of culture shock as outlined by Samovar (2010): euphoria, distress, adaptation, and adjustment. In the euphoria phase, students feel excited and proud of their new environment. However, the subsequent distress phase brings feelings of loneliness and alienation due to cultural differences. To navigate these challenges, students seek support through Indonesian communities, such as the CIS organization. Over time, they adapt to the New York culture, develop effective communication strategies, and gain independence and confidence. In the final adjustment phase, students overcome cultural challenges, feel more at ease, and maintain connections with their Indonesian identity. This study highlights the importance of social support and openness to cultural differences in achieving successful adaptation in a multicultural environment like New York.
