Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi pola komunikasi di antara pemuda multikultural berusia 17–22 tahun di Singapura dan dampaknya terhadap kesatuan sosial dan harmoni dalam komunitas pemuda. Singapura, dengan keragamannya yang mencakup berbagai budaya, bahasa, dan etnis, telah menjadikan multikulturalisme sebagai bagian integral dari identitas nasionalnya. Masalah yang diidentifikasi adalah bagaimana pemuda multikultural mampu menjaga harmoni sosial meskipun adanya perbedaan budaya dan tantangan komunikasi, seperti hambatan bahasa dan stereotip. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini meliputi Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Theory dan Gudykunst’s Anxiety/Uncertainty Management Theory.
Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan wawancara mendalam, observasi, dan diskusi peer review untuk mengumpulkan data. Hasil temuan menunjukkan bahwa pola komunikasi seperti perpindahan bahasa, penyesuaian nada, dan penggunaan komunikasi non-verbal memainkan peran penting dalam menciptakan inklusivitas dan saling pengertian. Meskipun peserta menghadapi tantangan seperti miskomunikasi, stereotip, dan rasisme kasual, strategi adaptasi yang mereka gunakan membuktikan ketahanan dan sensitivitas budaya mereka.
Kesimpulannya, pola komunikasi pemuda multikultural di Singapura tidak hanya mencerminkan identitas nasional yang multikultural tetapi juga memberikan kontribusi signifikan terhadap kesatuan sosial. Penelitian ini menyarankan studi lebih lanjut untuk mendalami isu miskomunikasi dan bagaimana strategi komunikasi dapat diterapkan di komunitas multikultural lainnya. / This study aims to explore the communication patterns among multicultural youth aged 17–22 in Singapore and their impact on social unity and harmony within the youth community. Singapore, with its diversity spanning multiple cultures, languages, and ethnicities, has made multiculturalism an integral part of its national identity. The identified problem focuses on how multicultural youth maintain social harmony despite cultural differences and communication challenges, such as language barriers and stereotypes. The theories employed in this research include Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Theory and Gudykunst’s Anxiety/Uncertainty Management Theory.
This qualitative study utilized in-depth interviews, observations, and peer review discussions to collect data. The findings reveal that communication patterns such as Pergantian Bahasa, Penyesuaian Nada, and non-verbal communication play a crucial role in fostering inclusivity and mutual understanding. Despite challenges like misunderstandings, stereotypes, and casual racism, participants demonstrated resilience and cultural sensitivity through adaptive communication strategies.
In conclusion, the communication patterns of multicultural youth in Singapore not only reflect the nation's multicultural identity but also significantly contribute to social unity. This study recommends further exploration into issues of miscommunication and how communication strategies can be applied in other multicultural communities.
