Abstract

Mobile phones have become increasingly widespread, affecting communication in both positive and negative ways in relationships. One such negative effect is "phubbing," where one partner ignores the other in favour of their phone, potentially undermining relationship satisfaction. This study examines the impact of partner phubbing on romantic relationship satisfaction, with a focus on the moderating role of attachment style. Data were collected through an online survey using the Generic Scale of Being Phubbed, the Relationship Assessment Scale, and the Experiences in Close Relationships Revised Scale. A total of 531 participants were involved, meeting the following criteria: (a) aged 18 and above, (b) in a romantic relationship (dating or married) for at least one year, (c) with a partner who has access to a mobile phone, and (d) not in a long-distance relationship. The results indicate that partner phubbing significantly predicts lower relationship satisfaction. Additionally, avoidant attachment style moderates this relationship, while anxious attachment does not significantly affect the relationship between phubbing and satisfaction. These findings suggest that partner phubbing negatively impacts relationship satisfaction, with attachment style— particularly avoidant attachment—playing a key role in this dynamic. Data dikumpulkan melalui survei online menggunakan Generic Scale of Being Phubbed, Relationship Assessment Scale, dan Experiences in Close Relationships Revised Scale.
