Abstract
Saudi Arabia has always been known as the beacon of Islamic states as well a rich country that is heavily dependent on oil. However, in 2017, crown prince Mohammad bin Salman (MBS) introduced Vision 2030 as his economic development program, focusing on diversification away from the oil sector as it is no longer sustainable. Consequently, this brings changes in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East region. This research examines the political and economic changes brought by Vision 2030 as well as religious shift to the country and the region. This research employs Constructivism theory, complete with concepts of ideas, beliefs, and identity, intersubjective understanding, and social discourse. Using the qualitative approach, the research builds its analysis with a descriptive method by utilizing primary and secondary data. The political and economic changes made in Saudi Arabia is derived through the three main pillars of Vision 2030: A Vibrant Society, A Thriving Economy, and An Ambitious Nation. This research finds that Saudi Arabia's goals for economic diversification necessitates the shift in the religious identity to be that of a moderate Islam country. Saudi Arabia’s economic development accelerates the economic developments of the rest of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The shift in the identity of Saudi Arabia to become a moderate Islamic country has also made it possible for the reconciliation of diplomatic relations with Iran. This research concludes on the notion that the role of religious identity does in fact significantly shape the way Saudi addresses its economic development and foreign relations./Arab Saudi dikenal sebagai negara Islam yang menjadi simbol dunia Islam dan sekaligus negara kaya yang sangat bergantung pada minyak.
