Abstract

Background: Pruritus is defined as an uncomfortable sensation in the skin that triggers the urge to scratch or commonly known as an itchy sensation.1 Pruritus can originate from the central nervous system or from the skin. The only peripheral tissues that can cause pruritus are the skin, mucous membranes, and cornea. Pruritus can occur for a variety of reasons and can be an indication of systemic disease. Some of the conditions associated with pruritus include skin diseases, systemic diseases, pregnancy, psychological illnesses, allergic reactions and also side effects of medications. Research on the prevalence of skin diseases in geriatric patients was conducted by Teoh et al. in 2016 in Singapore and found that of the 194 geriatric patients who were respondents, 48.5% experienced pruritus symptoms. Research on the same topic has also been conducted in Indonesia by Rinaldo et al. and showed that 50% of respondent geriatric patients experienced pruritus symptoms. Objective: To determine the characteristics of symptoms and factors that can affect pruritus symptoms in geriatric patients at Siloam Hospitals Lippo Village Building B. Method: The type of research used is a mixed study using the cross-sectional method. Data collection was carried out by filling out questionnaires and direct interviews conducted to 96 respondents. Subjects who match the inclusion and exclusion criteria of this study will be sampled and then processed with Chi-Square analysis using IBM SPSS version 23.0. Results: Respondents consisted of 129 subjects. There were 111 respondents (86.0%) who experienced pruritus symptoms and 18 respondents (14.0%) who did not experience pruritus symptoms. In research on the characteristics of pruritus symptoms in geriatric patients, it shows that the majority of geriatric patients feel pruritus symptoms for 6-12 hours a day with the majority of moderate pruritus degrees (49.5%), besides that disability in daily activities is also often complained of by geriatric patients who complain of pruritus symptoms. For skin care research in geriatric patients, it shows that the majority of geriatric patients bathe ≥ 2 times a day (85.3%), then for the type of soap use the majority of geriatric patients choose iv to use non-antiseptic soap (63.6%), while for the use of moisturizers 71 patients (55.0%) geriatrics do not routinely use moisturizers. Then for the presence of systemic diseases and underlying skin diseases 55 geriatric patients (42.6%) had systemic diseases and 8 geriatric patients (6.2%) had underlying skin diseases. Conclusion: The study concluded that pruritus is a common issue among geriatric patients, with the majority reporting prolonged symptoms that impact their quality of life.
