Abstract
Long-distance communication between children and their migrant worker fathers in West Papua has become a significant issue in maintaining family harmony, particularly in relationships constrained by distance and time. This study examines the communication patterns established between children and their migrant worker fathers, focusing on how these interactions help sustain emotional connections and continuity despite physical separation. This research employs a qualitative approach involving migrant worker families as informants, consisting of fathers, LDR children, and migrant worker mothers as supplementary data. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews of communication interactions between fathers working in West Papua and their children residing elsewhere. The findings reveal two primary communication patterns in migrant worker families: the consensual and the protective communication patterns. In consensual communication, open and supportive interactions occur despite limitations of distance and time. Meanwhile, protective communication emphasizes practical daily matters and enforces stricter parental control. Barrierss to long-distance communication, such as time differences and limited physical interaction, were identified, while supporting factors for effective communication include the use of technology and scheduled regular communication. This study provides a deeper understanding of communication dynamics and offers recommendations to improve family communication quality, efficient communication technologies, and well-planned communication timing.
