Abstract

Challenges to energy availability and disruptions in energy supply for industries during and after COVID-19 prompted Indonesia, as the 2022 G20 Presidency, to prioritize the issue of energy transition. This research aims to examine two key aspects related to renewable energy transition within the context of the G20 and Indonesia’s role in the 2022 G20 Presidency. The first objective is to analyze why the renewable energy transition has become a critical issue for G20 members, which are global economic powers and major carbon emitters. The second objective is to explore how Indonesia leveraged its 2022 G20 Presidency as momentum to promote renewable energy transition domestically. Using a qualitative approach and descriptive analytical method, this research finds that the renewable energy transition has become a crucial issue for G20 members due to worsening climate change, compounded by energy supply disruptions caused by COVID-19 amidst other major challenges such as fossil fuel dependency, geopolitical crises, and inequality in energy transition implementation. Indonesia, through its 2022 G20 Presidency, successfully utilized this momentum to prioritize renewable energy by introducing key policies, including the 2060 Net Zero Emission Roadmap, Presidential Regulation No. 112 of 2022, and the Indonesia Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP). Although Indonesia managed to use the international platform to create momentum for renewable energy transition, domestic implementation remains challenging. While these domestic-level challenges are beyond the scope of this study, they may serve as an interesting topic for future research.
