Abstract
This research evaluates the determinants of sustainable growth within Indonesian commercial banks with bank performance acting as a mediating factor. Employing the generalized method of moments (FD-GMM), the study uses secondary data from all listed commercial banks in Indonesia from 2013 to 2022, encompassing 399 observations. The novelty contribution of this research lies in eight bank-specific characteristics for commercial banks on sustainable growth with bank performance as a mediator. The study introduces two novel predictors, which are funding and loan growth. The findings reveal that prior sustainable growth, bank performance, and loan growth significantly influence current sustainable growth, whereas liquidity and efficiency exert a negative impact. In contrast to previous studies, asset quality showed no significant effect, attributable to new government relaxation policies implemented to mitigate the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Bank performance was found to fully mediate the negative effect of asset quality and efficiency, while the positive effects of asset management and financial leverage on sustainable growth. The direct impact of efficiency was more pronounced than its indirect effect, with a partial mediating influence. Future research should extend the analysis to commercial banks in ASEAN countries, examining both the direct and indirect effects of bank-specific characteristics on sustainable growth.
