Abstract

This study was conducted on learning vocabulary as an essential thing to do in order to acquire a language by focusing it on the vocabulary study. In teaching vocabulary there were three media investigated – flashcards, songs and movies - as teaching method. The subjects of the study were grade VIII in a Christian School in Ambarawa and the purpose was to consider how well students learn vocabulary through methods given. Classroom Action Research (CAR) proposed by Kemmis & Mc.Taggart is used as a research method in this study. This study has three cycles in which a different kind of media is introduced as the teaching method. The research is described in a descriptive and qualitative case study. The data was collected through observation, interviews, teacher mentor’s feedback, the record of students’ test result, and personal reflection. The media used in this study work successfully as shown by the students’ responses and feedback during the teaching learning process. Students have shown great shift in terms of their enthusiasm and test result which are increasing in learning English. / Studi ini dilakukan pada pembelajaran kosakata sebagai sesuatu yang penting dilakukan untuk menguasai sebuah bahasa. Dalam mengajarkan kosakata, ada tiga media yang digunakan – kartu bergambar, lagu, dan video – sebagi metode pengajaran. Subyek penelitian ini adalah siswa-siswa kelas 8 di sebuah sekolah kristen di Ambarawa dan tujuannya adalah untuk melihat sebaik apa siswa-siswa belajar kosakata melalui metode yang diberikan. Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) yang dikemukakan oleh Kemmis & Mc.Taggart adalah metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam studi ini. Studi ini terdiri atas tiga siklus di mana setiap siklus digunakan media yang berbeda sebagai metode pengajaran. Penelitian ini dijabarkan dalam studi kasus deskriptif dan kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan melalui pengamatan, wawancara, umpan balik guru pendamping, catatan nilai ulangan para siswa, dan refleksi pribadi. Media yang digunakan dalam studi ini tampaknya berhasil yang diperlihatkan oleh tanggapan dan umpan balik dari siswa selama proses belajar mengajar. Siswa siswa telah menunjukkan perubahan besar dari segi semangat dan nilai ujian mereka yang meningkat dalam belajar bahasa inggris.
