Abstract
Based on class’ pre-observation it was identified that students had difficulties in understanding many concepts of science. Therefore, this study aims at developing understanding of the transport membrane concepts in grade XI Biology students. This study took place at one of a secondary school in Nias, dated from July 7-November 24, 2009/2010 academic year. The design of this study is action research consisting of three cycles with seventeen grade XI science students. Research instruments used are documentation, observation, interview, and reflection sheet. The result of this study indicated that by using demonstration students’ understanding of the transport membrane concept can be developed. Hopefully the above results will be beneficial for teachers, students and for further study.

Berdasarkan pra-pengamatan kelas, penulis mengidentifikasi bahwa siswa memiliki kesulitan dalam memahami konsep-konsep ilmiah dalam mata pelajaran Biologi. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan pemahaman siswa kelas XI dalam penguasaan konsep transpor membran. Penelitian dilakukan di Sekolah Lentera Harapan Gunung Sitoli, Nias dimulai dari tanggal 7 juli - 24 November, tahun akademik 2009/2010. Desain yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas yang terdiri dari tiga siklus yang mengikutsertakan tujuh belas siswa/I kelas XI. Instrumen yang dipakai dalam penelitian adalah dokumentasi, pengamatan, wawancara, dan lembar refleksi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa dengan menggunakan metode pembelajaran demonstrasi pemahaman siswa dalam penguasaan konsep mekanisme transpor membran dapat dikembangkan. Hasil dari penelitian ini diharapkan dapat bermanfaat bagi guru-guru mata pelajaran biologi, siswa/i, dan penelitian lebih lanjut.
