Abstract
Based on the pre-observation of classes, it was identified that most of the students were reluctant and not really interested in either answering the teacher’s questions or asking questions of the teacher. Theh study aims at developing grade VII students’ English speaking ability by using positive reinforcement. This study took place in Temanggung, from July, 11th 2009 to November, 28 th 2009 in the academic year of 2009//2010. The design of the study is action research, consisting of thee cycls with 34 grade VII students. Research instruments used for data gathering were pre-observation, documentation, and observation. Hypothesis of this study is that positive reinforcement can develop grade VII students’ English speaking ability. Hopefully this study is beneficial for English teachers and for further study.

Berdasarkan hasil pengamatan kelas sebelumnya, ditemukan bahwa banyak siswa kelas VII segan dan enggan, baik dalam bertanya kepada guru maupun menjawab pertanyaan guru. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggrs siswa kelas VII dengan menggunakan penguat positif. Penellitian ini bertempat di Temanggung pada 11 Juli 2009 sampai dengan 28 November 2009, tahun ajaran 2009/2010. Rancangan penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) yang terdiri dari tiga siklus dengan jumlah siswa kelas VII sebanyak 34 orang. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data meliputi pengamatan awal, dokumentasi, dan pengamatan. Hipotesis dari penelitian ini adalah penggunaan penguat positif dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggri siswa kelas VII. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat berguna bagi guru Bahasa Inggris dan untuk penelitian selanjutnya.
