Abstract
This research is purposeful for enhancing students’ motivation by implementing a learning-focused classroom. Based on the pre-observation, it was identified that the students were having low motivation to learn, especially in Social Studies subject, which includes Sociology. The constraints might be due to students’ family and cultural background. The subject of the research was 94 grade 10 students in one Christian private school, located in Makassar, Eastern Indonesia. The research was conducted in Sociology subject from July 19, 2009 to December 17, 2009 in 2009/2010 academic year. The methodology used in the research was action research, consisting of two cycles. Research instruments used in gathering the data were: the researcher herself as participant-observer, lesson plans, observational report, personal reflection journal, and other documentation complemented it. The result of this study indicates that the implementation of learning-focused classroom can help to enhance students’ motivation to learn.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan motivasi siswa melalui penerapan learning focused classroom. Berdasarkan pra-observasi, diidentifikasikan bahwa motivasi siwa untuk belajar itu rendah, terutama dalam pelajaran-pelajaran Sosial Terpadu, termasuk Sosiologi. Hal tersebut mungkin dikarenakan oleh latar belakang keluarga dan budaya dari siswa itu sendiri. Subjek penelitian adalah 94 siswa kelas 10 di sebuah sekolah swasta Kristen di Makassar, Indonesia bagian Timur.Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam pelajaran Sosiologi,yang dimulai sejak tanggal 19 Juli 2009 sampai dengan 17 Desember 2009, dalam tahun ajaran 2009/2010. Metodologi penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian tindakan kelas, yang terdiri dari dua siklus. Instrument penelitian yang digunakan untuk pengumpulan data adalah peneliti sendiri sebagai pelaku-peneliti rencana pembelajaran,laporan observasi, jurnal refleksi pribadi, dan dokumentasi lain yang melengkapi hal-hal tersebut. Hasil penelitian terhadap siswa kelas 10 menunjukkan bahwa penerapan learning-focused classroom dapat meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam belajar.
