Abstract
Penerapan Matematika dalam berbagai bidang studi seharusnya sejalan dengan pembelajaran Matematika yang maksimal. Namun disayangkan bahwa banyak dari siswa yang menunjukkan kurangnya motivasi dalam pembelajaran Matematika. Melihat situasi ini maka sangat diperlukan suatu pendekatan untuk meningkatkan motivasi siswa dalam pembelajaran Matematika. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah small power distance dapat meningkatkan motivasi siswa kelas XI IPA dalam pembelajaran Matematika dan cara penerapan serta dampak lain small power distance dalam hubungan guru dengan siswa pada pelajaran Matematika. Metode yang digunakan adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). Subjek penelitian yang dilakukan adalah siswa kelas XI IPA3 salah satu SMA Kristen swasta di Semarang. Adapun instrumen penelitian yang digunakan dalam PTK ini adalah jurnal refleksi penulis, hasil wawancara dengan siswa, hasil observasi dari mentor, hasil pembelajaran siswa (daftar nilai dan kertas ulangan), dan komentar yang diberikan siswa secara lisan. Dari penelitian tindakan kelas yang dilakukan, disimpulkan bahwa penerapan small power distance dalam hubungan guru dengan siswa dapat meningkatkan motivasi siswa kelas XI IPA pada pembelajaran Matematika. Dalam pembelajaran Matematika penerapan small power distance dapat dilakukan dengan menciptakan komunikasi dua arah dan proses pembelajaran yang berfokus pada siswa. Dampak lain adalah beberapa siswa mulai memanggil guru dengan sebutan “kakak”, dimana dampak ini dapat mengganggu proses belajar mengajar.

The implementation of Mathematics in various kinds of field of study should go hand in hand with the maximal learning process of Mathematics. Unfortunately though, many students show little motivation in learning Mathematics. Being aware of this situation, having an approach to increase the motivation of students in learning Mathematics is needed. This research aims to know whether small power distance can increase the motivation of grade XI science major students in learning Mathematics and to know how to apply it as well as the other impacts of small power distance in teacher and students relationship in learning Mathematics. The method used is Class Action Research (CAR). The subjects of the research are the students of grade XI IPA3 of a private Christian high school in Semarang. The research instruments used in this CAR are the writer’s journal reflection, the interview with the students, the observation result of the mentor, the students’ test results, and the comments given by the students. Based on the class action research conducted, it is concluded that the application of small power distance between teacher and students relationship can increase the motivation of grade XI science major students in learning Mathematics. Learning Mathematics by applying small power distance can be done by creating a two-way communication and student-focused learning. Another impact is that some of the students began to call the teacher as their “sister” and this can disturb the teaching and learning process.
