Abstract
The culture of Indonesia places immense value on unity, as a
manifestation of the third principle of its ideology, Pancasila (Constitution
of Indonesia, 1945). To preserve this value within the multilingualism
society, Bahasa Indonesia was vowed as the language of unity in the 1928
Youth Pledge known as Sumpah Pemuda (Antari, 2019). To further
preserve the value, the high-context communication style is implemented
in Bahasa Indonesia (Saputri & Saraswati, 2017). This contradicts the use
of swear words, which by nature are offensive (Fägersten, 2007). In
Bahasa Indonesia, most swear words are derived from taboo references,
including animals, inferior objects, body parts, supernatural entities,
kinship terms, unpleasant circumstances, sexual activities, and indecent
professions (Wiyana, 2004). The contradiction is further exacerbated by
YouTube’s role as one of the most popular mass media platforms in the
digital world (Balakrishnan & Griffiths, 2017). The influence is
particularly powerful in Indonesia, which ranks fourth globally among
countries with the most YouTube users, with over 139 million users
(Statista, 2023). This raises a question as to why many popular Indonesian
YouTube content creators use swear words in their videos. Studying a
prominent subject like Gofar Hilman adds valuable insights into the
broader phenomena of swear word usage among many popular Indonesian
YouTube content creators by providing his perspective on such use despite
the exacerbated contradiction. In an effort to explore Gofar Hilman’s
perspective on the use of swear words in his YouTube videos, this study
adopts a qualitative research approach with a case study research design.
Along the lines of providing insights into the problem being raised, this
study collects data through semi-structured interviews with two
informants, Gofar Hilman and Vivid Argarini. To better understand Gofar
Hilman’s perspective, the Self-Presentation Theory is implemented to
interpret the research findings.
Bahasa Indonesia (Saputri & Saraswati, 2017).
Mempelajari sosok terkenal seperti Gofar Hilman
memberikan wawasan berharga mengenai fenomena penggunaan kata-kata
menggali perspektif Gofar Hilman tentang penggunaan kata-kata kasar
dalam video YouTube-nya, penelitian ini mengadopsi pendekatan
penelitian kualitatif dengan desain penelitian studi kasus. Penelitian ini
mengumpulkan data melalui wawancara semi-terstruktur dengan dua
informan, Gofar Hilman dan Vivid Argarini. Untuk lebih memahami
perspektif Gofar Hilman, teori Presentasi Diri diterapkan untuk
menginterpretasikan temuan penelitian.
