Abstract
This study aims to analyze the legal protection provided to consumers concerning
the distribution of hazardous cosmetics, focusing on the specific case of Madame
Gie Blush On, which contains the potentially harmful K3 and K10 dyes. The
background of this research highlights the growing concerns surrounding the
safety of cosmetic products in the market, particularly affordable options that may
contain substances harmful to health. Despite the fact that Madame Gie is
registered with the National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM), this
study reveals that BPOM certification alone does not necessarily guarantee the
safety or quality of the product.
One of the primary issues identified in this study is the negligence of cosmetic
companies in adhering to established safety protocols during the production
process, which allows dangerous substances to remain in the final product. Many
consumers, attracted by the low price point of products like Madame Gie, tend to
overlook or are unaware of the potential risks posed by such products. This
research employs a qualitative approach, utilizing content analysis to examine
relevant regulations on cosmetic safety, BPOM oversight, and the associated risks
of harmful ingredients in cosmetic formulations.
The findings suggest that there are significant gaps in both monitoring and
enforcement, which contribute to the continued circulation of hazardous products
in the market. The study also emphasizes the crucial role of consumer awareness
and education in mitigating risks related to cosmetic safety. While BPOM
certification is an important step toward ensuring product safety, it is not a
foolproof guarantee. The study concludes by calling for stronger legal protections,
more rigorous oversight, and greater consumer vigilance to protect individuals
from unsafe cosmetic products. Enhanced legal protections and improved
enforcement are critical to safeguarding consumers from potentially harmful
products in the market.
