Abstract
E-sports has become one of the largest sectors in the entertainment industry, experiencing rapid growth over the past several years. This surge has contributed to rising viewership for competitive games such as League of Legends, Counter-Strike 2, and Valorant, leading to an increase in the number and popularity of E-sports watch parties. However, audience immersion during these events can vary greatly depending on the audio-visual experience. General watch parties utilize stereo audio, which may limit spatial awareness and reduce engagement during high-intensity moments. The goal of this study is to analyse how the implementation of surround sound technology can affect perceived levels of immersion in viewers. The research is conducted through a live watch party experiment where participants who are avid E-sports consumers are faced with traditional stereo and 7.0 surround sound setups. This experience was then measured through subjective means. Findings indicate that viewers had a significantly enhanced experience when 7.0 surround sound was employed; the setup positively impacted factors such as atmosphere, envelopment, and presence, which contributed to a higher immersion. This study highlights the potential of immersive audio setups in elevating audience satisfaction and could inform future practices in E-sports & media.
