Abstract

The design for the Enneagram vinyl album by Sleeping At Last aims to communicate the emotions and narratives of each song through typography and visual imagery. The album was chosen for its profound lyrics and music, as well as the Enneagram concept, which offers a space to explore themes like self-discovery, vulnerability, and transformation. This design is presented in a special edition vinyl packaging that includes a lyrics booklet, reflecting the core themes of the album. The design process incorporates Frank Armstrong's hearing type theory, which connects music characteristics such as amplitude, duration, pitch, and timbre with typographic elements. Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory is also used to analyze the lyrics as s icons, indexes, and symbols related to each song’s themes. The design process follows the five stages of design by Landa: orientation, analysis, conceptual design, design development, and implementation. The result is a design that serves not only as a physical product but also as a space for reflection, enriching the listener’s experience in understanding the emotions and narrative within the album.
