Abstract

The rising phenomenon of singlehood in Indonesia contrasts with society’s low tolerance for single status. Societal perceptions of marital status as a social identity create external pressure on single individuals. In practice, the societal expectation to marry tends to be focused on women, thus rendering them more vulnerable to negative stereotypes. Meanwhile, the absence of intimate relationships may present an internal issue that leads single women to experience romantic loneliness. This quantitative study employed multiple regression analysis to examine the predictive roles of romantic loneliness (internal factor) and the perception of negative stereotypes (external factor) on fear of being single among Indonesian women. Drawing on data from 350 single women aged 25–55 years (Mage = 27.59), the results revealed a contextual simultaneous effect of romantic loneliness and negative stereotypes on the fear of being single, particularly among women with either an intention to marry or a current dating relationship. For single women who did not intend to marry or were not dating, only negative stereotypes significantly predicted their fear of being single. These findings suggest that the fear of being single among Indonesian women is not merely determined by relationship status but is also shaped by how they perceive romantic loneliness, the impact of which may vary depending on their marital orientation.
