Abstract
Cities are not only shaped by physical space, but also by the emotional needs of the community. The Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) area, which was originally designed as a national sports center, has now developed into an active social space. However, the need for public space that supports psychological recovery, and creative expression has not been fully facilitated, so a space is needed that is not only functional, but also experientially meaningful.
The GBK Art Museum Complex was designed as a response to this need. The aim of this design is to provide an alternative container in the form of a museum that is open, inclusive, and able to build a restorative and reflective spatial experience. The main problems include how the museum can become a public space that supports the emotional well-being of the community, responds to the climate and landscape of GBK, and conveys artistic value not only through collections, but also through the form and space itself.
The methods used are qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory. The process starts from a literature review, site and environmental analysis, to space programming. Exploration is carried out through mass strategies, spatial orientation, and inter-zone space design based on the context and user experience.
The design results show a contextual mass arrangement to the orientation of the area, integration of the existing landscape, and a composition of space that forms a reflective journey rhythm. This museum is not only a place for art appreciation, but also a public space that provides a pause to stop, feel, and connect emotionally. To support what has been described, spaces such as outdoor galleries, amphitheaters, buffer areas, flexible community spaces, and natural corridors with lighting and cross ventilation are designed as design elements that form a spatial experience to support creative, intellectual, and emotional well-being and become a restorative space.
