Abstract

Jakarta faces significant urban challenges related to water management and environmental sustainability, necessitating alternative sources of water to address its ongoing crisis. The city's dependence on groundwater, due to insufficient access to piped water, has caused alarming rates of land subsidence and heightened flood risks. With over half of Jakarta's population relying on groundwater, addressing these issues is critical. Rainwater harvesting, integrated into urban infrastructure such as the Gelora Bung Karno parking facility, presents a viable approach to alleviating these pressures while offering an alternative water source for the city. Effective implementation of rainwater harvesting requires designs tailored to Jakarta's specific environmental conditions and urban landscape. By optimizing system features, significant volumes of rainwater can be collected and utilized, reducing dependence on groundwater. These systems contribute to aquifer replenishment and urban runoff management, thereby promoting a more sustainable and balanced water cycle in the city. This project explores the integration of rainwater harvesting systems through site analysis, precedent studies, and design modelling within the GBK area. Thoughtful design strategies ensures both functionality and environmental impact, advancing water resilience across Jakarta. The exploration revealed the need for underground rainwater storage tanks as a primary infrastructure for water management. Additionally, interactive public water features are introduced to serve as visual appeal and community engagement tools. The design also incorporates vertical and horizontal openings in the building’s central area to preserve a visual axis toward the main stadium and establish vertical visual connectivity between floors. This approach not only addresses Jakarta’s water crisis but also enhances public awareness of sustainable practices, promoting a more resilient and interconnected urban ecosystem. The integration of functional and community-centred solutions highlights the potential for sustainable transformation across the city’s urban fabric.
