Abstract

Background: The use of electronic devices, such as computers, smartphones, tablets and television, has become an inseparable part of everyday life. The effects of prolonged use of electronic devices can give rise to various diseases, one of which is dry eye syndrome. Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is a condition where the moisture in the eye lining decreases and causes the eyes to become dry. Although there are many studies on the relationship between the duration of electronic device use and dry eye syndrome, some studies do not explain whether the duration of the study is constant or average and whether there are differences in risk from using different electronic devices.
Objectives: To determine the correlation between the duration of use of electronic devices and the incidence of Dry Eye Syndrome in Pelita Harapan University students
Methods: This research uses a cross-sectional study design with the required sample being 109 Pelita Harapan University students with analytic correlative method. This research uses Google Form to collect data from students.
Results: There were 109 samples who met the inclusion-exclusion criteria to take part in the research. A total of 56 (51.4%) respondents had dry eye syndrome. A correlation coefficient (r) of 0.381 was obtained with a p - value of <0.01, indicating a significant relationship with a weak correlation between the duration of electronic device use and dry eye syndrome.
Conclusion: There is a correlation between the duration of use of electronic devices and dry eye syndrome in University of Pelita Harapan students
