Abstract

In large-scale campus planning, dead spaces often emerge due to a lack of attention to spatial connectivity. At major educational institutions such as Pelita Harapan University (UPH) in Karawaci, areas like narrow corridors and unused land are frequently overlooked, resulting in decreased spatial quality, cleanliness issues, safety risks, and weak inter-area integration. This study explores the transformation of dead spaces within the UPH environment through the use of Mixed Reality (MR) technology, which enables the integration of virtual elements into physical spaces without requiring physical alterations. Unlike Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality merges digital and real-world elements in real time, creating more dynamic and immersive spatial interactions. This technology has the potential to optimize dead spaces into active, engaging, and productive areas. Two primary intervention sites are the corridor between Building B and the HOPE building, which functions as an emergency exit path, and a green garden area that was once a canceled tower project and previously a natural pond. The research employs a qualitative methodology, including: (1) a literature review on dead spaces and the potential of Mixed Reality technology; (2) site surveys and spatial analysis to identify spatial issues and intervention opportunities; (3) design prototyping exploration with emphasis on natural elements, water, and digital components; and (4) user testing through interactive simulations to evaluate user responses. The design strategy focuses on the placement of virtual objects around users and the integration of atmospheric elements such as nature, water, and digital features to enhance space quality and connectivity. Through this approach, MR space design aims to transform dead spaces into active and holistically integrated areas within the campus context. The outcomes of this study offer innovative contributions in architecture, digital technology, and education by proposing an adaptive MR-based design approach that enhances spatial quality and user experience in the built environment.
