Abstract
Repetitive spaces in higher education environments have the potential to cause visual fatigue and reduce users' psychological comfort due to monotonous spatial patterns. This research departs from the issue of circulation space on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors of Building D at Universitas Pelita Harapan, which exhibits repetitive characteristics, and evaluates the potential integration of Mixed Reality (MR) technology as a design strategy to transform users’ spatial experiences. The neo-futurist architectural approach is used as a conceptual foundation, given its suitability in presenting principles and values of dynamic, organic, flexible, and interactive forms. The methods used include contextual site analysis, user surveys employing quantitative and qualitative approaches, as well as the design and evaluation of MR-based prototypes using the Meta Quest 3 device. The initial exploration stage produced a design prototype that integrates virtual elements inspired by nature, such as rain, vegetation, and wind—to construct the spatial atmosphere. User surveys of the prototype identified positive responses regarding the increased intensity and immersive quality of spatial experience, but also indicated the need for optimization in aspects of lighting and visual legibility. The final design stage emphasizes the development of a more complex and comprehensive spatial strategy, focusing on the spatial atmosphere and adaptive spatial interactivity narrative. Design elements are arranged to form an intensive, immersive, and intuitive spatial experience through the neo-futurist approach, ranging from the development of spatial programs, the design of virtual forms and materiality, to the organization of user movement flow. This design simultaneously reconstructs user perception of repetitive spaces, strengthens emotional connection, and enhances the aesthetic and functional quality of the space as a whole. This study concludes that the integration of Mixed Reality in architectural design can be an effective strategy in responding to the challenges of repetitive space. The application of the neo-futurist approach strengthens the transition between physical and virtual space, thereby encouraging the creation of learning environments that are more adaptive, responsive, and positively impactful on users' spatial experiences.
