Abstract

Background: Palliative care is an approach that focuses on improving the quality of life for patients with life-threatening illnesses and their families. Nursing students, who are future healthcare professionals, play a crucial role in its implementation. However, several studies have found that students' knowledge is still inadequate, which affects their ability to provide effective palliative care. This study aims to investigate nursing students’ knowledge of palliative care at Pelita Harapan University, Faculty of Nursing. Method: This study uses a quantitative descriptive method with a cross-sectional approach. The population in the study is 315 active nursing students from cohort 2021. The research sample consisted of 289 students with a response rate of 91.75%. This research was conducted from February-April 2025. The research instrument used is the PCQN-I questionnaire. The data were analyzed using SPSS for windows, version 27.0. Result: This study shows that although almost 100% of nursing students have clinical experience in palliative care, their theoretical understanding is still lacking, particularly in the aspects of philosophy, basic principles, spirituality, and psychosocial factors. Good understanding was found in the domain of pain and symptom management, but there were misconceptions regarding the side effects of morphine and factors affecting pain management. Suggestion: It is important to emphasize a multidisciplinary approach, effective communication, and PC practice training in nursing students' education to prepare them to become competent nurses. Similar findings in international studies confirm that challenges in PC education are global in nature
