Abstract

Background: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is prevalent among university students, particularly nursing students in dormitories who face elevated risk due to demanding academics and activities impacting health. Early symptom recognition via GERD self-assessment using the GERD Questionnaire (GERD-Q) is crucial for prevention and evaluating medication effectiveness, enabling students to adopt healthy practices. Objective: This study examined the relationship between GERD self-assessment and prevention practices among students at a private Indonesian university. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional design involving 735 students was used. Purposive sampling based on criteria was applied. Data were collected using the GERD-Q and a prevention practices questionnaire, analyzed with univariate and bivariate methods, and Chi-square tests. Results: Most students were aged 19–21 and predominantly female (89.1%). The majority showed negative GERD self-assessment (83.9%) and poor prevention practices (69.8%). The Chi-square test revealed no significant relationship between self-assessment and prevention practices (p = 0.509), suggesting poor practices did not directly trigger GERD in this population. Recommendation: Further research is needed to identify specific factors influencing GERD symptoms and prevention practices in students.
