Abstract

However, it is not uncommon for familial caregivers to experience stressors. Based on interviews with six familial caregivers in one halfway house, it was found that caregivers felt sad, anxious, and angry; and personal life was affected. This study aims to identify the burden experienced by familial caregivers while caring for cancer patients in one halfway house. The research design was descriptive quantitative with a cross-sectional method and a sample of 61 respondents who were familial caregivers of cancer patients and obtained by accidental sampling. Data collection used the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) questionnaire and the data analysis technique was univariate analysis. The results showed that the majority of respondents were adults, female, high school / vocational school education, not working, and were parents of patients with stage 2 cancer, and had been a caregiver for <1 year. The mean and standard deviation of caregiver burden were 31.85 and 12.829. Caregivers experience heavy burden in two domains, namely physical burden and relationships with patients. The physical and relationship burden experienced by caregivers can be related to the patient's physical condition and the assistance that must be provided and the patient's dependence on the caregiver. Health workers and related parties should provide care and support that helps caregivers, and caregivers should be able to identify available resources and strategies in dealing with the burden associated with caring for patients.
