Abstract

Vertical housing is a solution to land scarcity in urban areas, yet the main challenge lies in how to create living spaces that support tranquillity and mental well-being. The CubeNest project addresses this issue by proposing the integration of a green façade with fractal patterns on a vertical housing complex at Rumah Susun ASN 3 in the new capital city of Indonesia, Ibu Kota Nusantara. This approach not only utilizes vegetation as an aesthetic and ecological element but also applies fractal patterns, which have been scientifically proven to reduce stress levels. The research was conducted exploratively through site observation, precedent studies, and iterative design based on fractal principles. Throughout the design process, digital fabrication technologies such as 3D printing and laser cutting were employed to facilitate and accelerate model production.
The design results show that the application of low-dimension fractals in the green façade can create a visually calming atmosphere and enhance residents’ emotional connection to their surroundings. The modular arrangement of vegetation and parametrically designed light openings successfully form reflective, therapeutic spaces. The development of balconies as active transitional spaces provides positive psychological effects without altering the core spatial configuration. This design divides the residential area into three zones (work, living, and healing) allowing residents to choose spaces according to their emotional needs. In addition, the implemented modular system enhances construction efficiency. In conclusion, the fractal-based green façade design approach not only improves the quality of the physical environment but also serves as an effective means to foster tranquillity in urban vertical housing. This approach opens opportunities for more holistic, human-centered, and sustainable architectural solutions.
