Abstract

Generation Z tends to avoid using stairs because they perceive it as tiring, boring, and time-consuming. This results in a low utilization of vertical spaces. Therefore, this research proposes the application of Mixed Reality (MR) technology to stair elements as an interactive and immersive design solution capable of reshaping perceptions of vertical circulation experiences. By combining eclectic, futuristic design approaches with Balinese cultural elements, the staircase in Building D of Pelita Harapan University is transformed into a narrative gamified space: Finding, Collecting, and Blind Box. Each floor offers a distinct digital experience, from searching for the character Sinta in the form of colored balls, collecting Canang Sari flowers as part of a ritual, to a luck-based game for obtaining a key to unlock a final gate all designed to enhance user engagement through gamification and visual interaction. The design is inspired by the Ramayana epic, Hindu rituals, and spiritual experiences such as the Kecak dance and the atmosphere of Nyepi. Through MR technology, users do not only traverse the stairs physically but also emotionally and narratively, transforming the act of stair climbing into an engaging and explorative experience. Through this design experiment, MR technology is shown to enhance spatial quality and attract Gen Z users to choose stairs over elevators. The findings suggest that MR-based interactive spaces can become an innovative architectural strategy to boost engagement, enrich spatial experiences, and support a more active and sustainable lifestyle.
