Abstract
/This study examines the role of gifticon in building social relationships in South Korea. Gifticon was selected as it represents an innovation in the form of digital gifts that has rapidly developed alongside advances in communication technology. The main focus of this study is how the act of giving and receiving gifticon is interpreted as a form of social exchange. Social exchange theory is used as the analytical framework to understand the process of reciprocity in mobile gifting practices, while a phenomenological approach is employed to explore users’ subjective experiences. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing semi-structured in-depth interviews and participant observation. Data were collected from five informants who are active users of giticons in South Korea. The collected data will be analyzed using an inductive approach to gain a comprehensive understanding of the studied phenomenon. The findings show that gifticon functions as a symbolic medium that not only fosters emotional closeness and strengthens social bonds, but also creates reciprocal obligations between individuals. Symbolic value, practical efficiency, and perceived appreciation are key factors in the use of gifticon as a medium of social exchange. This study recommends further research to explore the influence of digital culture and the dynamics of social relationships in gift-giving practices within other modern societies./
