Abstract

This study aims to explore intercultural communication accommodation strategies between local vendors and Chinese tourists at Kawah Ijen. Employing a qualitative interpretive approach and grounded in Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT), the research draws on TikTok and Instragram video interactions to examine spontaneous communication patterns. Findings reveal that convergence is the most dominant strategy, with limited occurrences of divergence and maintenance. Multimodal nonverbal communication—such as facial expressions, gestures, and intonation—plays a significant role in overcoming language barriers. The observed interactions are adaptive and context-dependent, reflecting social intelligence shaped by direct interpersonal experience. The study also highlights the relevance of social media as an authentic and valuable data source in contemporary communication research.
