Abstract
This study aims to determine how the controversial statement made by Abidzar Al Ghifari triggered a boycott of the Indonesian version of the film A Business Proposal from the perspective of cancel culture. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data obtained through online media and social media studies. The results of the study show that Abidzar's statement, which is considered to be demeaning to K-Drama fans and dating app users, has triggered a negative response from the public in the form of a call to boycott the film he starred in. This phenomenon is analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory which divides meaning into three layers: denotation, connotation, and myth. Cancel culture in this context appears as a form of social sanction carried out by the digital community to demand moral accountability from public figures. Boycotting films is a symbol of the shift in media consumption values, where audiences now judge entertainment products not only from an aesthetic perspective, but also from the ethics and behavior of the individuals involved in them. This study shows that cancel culture acts as a new form of social control that reflects the public's moral sensitivity to public figures, but also raises debate about the boundaries between criticism and social punishment in the digital era.
