Abstract

Indonesia ranks second in the world for tuberculosis (TB) cases with a higher mortality rate compared to Covid-19. Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria are easily transmitted through the air when people with TB cough, sneeze and spit. The fact that there are simple steps that can be used to break the chain of TB transmission by applying proper cough etiquette. This prompted researchers to conduct a more specific educational intervention on cough etiquette. The aim was to determine the effect of education on the knowledge and behavior of cough ethics in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. The research design used a quasi- experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest model. The instrument used was a questionnaire of knowledge and behavior of cough ethics in TB patients who had gone through validity and reliability tests to 39 respondents. The results before being given health education there were (5.1%) respondents had good knowledge and (30.8%) had good behavior, but after being given health education there was an increase in knowledge to (100%) and behavior to (80.7%) with a significance value (p<0.05). These results indicate that there is a significant increase in knowledge and behavior when given health education. Future researchers are expected to increase the sample size, observe behavior over a longer period of time. Considering the stigma factor in patients and the community towards tuberculosis that can affect respondents' participation in educational activities.
